Somatic training begins with something simple: noticing what is happening in your body. You might notice a held breath, tight shoulders or the urge to turn away from a difficult conversation. Rather than rushing to explain or change that experience, you learn to pay attention to it.
For a facilitator, that attention extends to the person in front of you. Can you offer a practice clearly? Can you leave room for a no? Can you notice when it is time to slow down or stop?
This guide explains what somatic facilitator training involves and what to look for before choosing a programme. If you want to see how Parimukti teaches these skills in a live cohort, explore our online somatic therapy training.
What is somatic training?
Somatic training brings attention to lived experience: sensation, breath, movement, emotion and the ways we respond to what is happening around us. In facilitator training, you learn to guide that exploration with another person while respecting their choices and your own scope of practice.
It is different from collecting a list of exercises. An exercise is only one part of the work. How you introduce it, the pace you choose and the space you leave for feedback all matter.
What does a somatic facilitator learn?
Parimukti’s online programme includes guided experience, discussion, partner practice, observation and feedback. The foundations include:
- Noticing sensation, breath, movement and attention.
- Introducing grounding and orientation practices.
- Offering invitations rather than commands.
- Working with silence without rushing to fill it.
- Respecting consent, boundaries and a person’s decision to stop.
- Recognising your own reactions while you facilitate.
- Beginning and closing a practice clearly.
- Knowing when something is outside your role.
These skills develop through practice. Reading about them can help you understand the ideas, but being observed and receiving feedback gives you something a keyword list cannot.
Who is somatic facilitator training for?
You may already teach yoga, coach, guide meditation or work with breath and movement. You may be a counsellor or therapist looking to add embodied practices within your existing professional role. Or you may be beginning to explore facilitation after your own experience of this work.
You do not need to arrive knowing everything. What matters is a willingness to participate, practise and receive feedback. If you are unsure whether a programme fits your background, ask the training team before enrolling.
Can you learn somatic work online?
Yes, but the format matters. A library of recorded lessons offers a different experience from a live group in which you practise with other people and receive feedback.
Parimukti’s live online somatic facilitator training runs over four weekends. Participants experience practices, work with partners and small groups, observe facilitation and complete an assessment. Supporting materials and integration practices sit alongside the live work.
Before choosing an online programme, ask how much of it is live, how practice is supervised and what happens when you need help. Read the full programme page for the current structure and application process.
What should you look for in a somatic training programme?
- A clear scope. What does the training prepare you to do, and what does it not qualify you to do?
- Real practice. Will you guide other people and receive specific feedback, or only watch lessons?
- Consent and choice. Can participants pause, decline or adapt a practice?
- Clear assessment. What must you complete to receive the certificate?
- Honest claims. Be cautious about promises of guaranteed healing, income or professional status.
A certificate is not the same as a professional licence. A facilitator should work within their training and existing qualifications, and recognise when someone needs support beyond that role.
Is somatic facilitator training the same as Somatic Experiencing?
Do not assume that programmes with similar names award the same qualification. Check the exact programme, provider and certificate. Parimukti’s programme awards its own Somatic Facilitator Certification to participants who complete the requirements and assessment. It should not be presented as a different provider’s qualification.
How does Parimukti approach this work?
The Parimukti Method brings together experiential learning, reflection and facilitation practice. Its emphasis is on curiosity, honesty, responsibility and respecting the person in front of you, rather than trying to produce a particular experience.
