6 Somatic Practices for the First Months of Retirement

Six optional ways to explore routines, relationships and support during retirement, without a required adjustment timeline.

Retirement can arrive with a party, and then a strange quiet. Your body may still wake at 6 a.m., the week can lose its shape, and your sense of who you are may take time to adjust. Or you may love it from day one. These six practices are for finding a new rhythm in the first months, whichever way it goes. Try the ones that fit, and leave the rest.

1. Notice the old schedule

Waking at work time, restlessness on Monday mornings, a strange guilt by Tuesday afternoon: these can happen, and they are not a sign you have made a mistake. You can notice them with some humour. It can take a while for habits to adjust, and you can let your sleep find its own pattern, or keep a gentle morning routine if that suits you.

2. Give the day a spine, then let it bend

One or two fixed points, such as a morning walk, a lunch hour or a Thursday swim, can give the week some structure. Walking at your old commute time is one option: same ritual, new destination. Choose a pace and distance that suit your health, and take water and your phone. If you are unsure what level of activity is right for you, ask your doctor.

3. Make room for the change in identity

If a heaviness or restlessness follows you, perhaps with questions like “who am I without the title,” you can let it be felt and not solved. You might track what you notice, if anything, and place a hand on your chest and breathe in your usual way if that is comforting. Talk about it with friends or family, or write about it. You do not need to decide what is next right away.

4. Move in ways that belong to you now

Your movement during work may have been shaped by obligation. Now you can experiment: swimming, dancing, gardening, stretching badly and happily. Notice which movements you enjoy. If you have a health condition, check with your doctor about what suits you, and start gently.

5. Practise being unreachable in small doses

If you were always on call, you could start to retire the reflex gently: the phone in another room for an hour, an afternoon without the news. You may notice an urge to check, and let it pass. If colleagues still contact you, you can agree on what you will and will not respond to.

6. Choose your people on purpose

Work supplied people by default, and retirement means choosing them. Call a friend, join a class or volunteer. Co-regulation is one name people use for settling alongside others. A weekly fixed plan, such as a coffee with a neighbour or a walking group, can be enough.

Money, time and the practical side

Not everything is about feelings. If you have recently retired, you may want to review your budget, check any pension or benefit paperwork, and think about how you will fill your time. Some people make a list of things they have always wanted to do, and pick one a month. Others take a few weeks of doing very little before planning anything. Either is acceptable.

A sample first week

If a blank calendar feels daunting, you could sketch a loose plan:

  • Monday: a walk at your old commute time, and one errand.
  • Tuesday: a call or coffee with a friend.
  • Wednesday: something with your hands, such as cooking, gardening or a repair.
  • Thursday: a class, a swim or a group.
  • Friday: a longer outing, or a quiet day.

Treat it as a draft. After a week, change what did not suit you, and keep what did.

If you are retiring with a partner

You may now spend much more time together. It can help to talk about what each of you wants from the day, to agree on some time apart, and to keep your own interests. Small irritations can come up, and a short conversation about routines can ease them.

If the quiet feels dark

If low mood, poor sleep or a sense of uselessness settles in and does not lift, talk to your doctor. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a crisis line or your local emergency number.
