5 Somatic Tools for Living with Blushing

Five somatic tools for living with blushing: ways to steady yourself in the moment and soften self-criticism without promising it will stop.

Your face goes warm, and you are sure that everyone can see. Blushing can have different causes, and it may not stop in the moment. These five tools do not stop it, and they make no claim to. They are about the moments around it and how you treat yourself.

1. Let it be there

The first step is to stop fighting. Trying hard not to blush can pull your attention onto your face and add to the self-consciousness. You can think, “My face is warm, and that is allowed.” Your cheeks might settle in their own time.

2. Move your attention outward

Let your eyes rest on something in the room, and listen to the voice that is speaking. Orienting can shift your attention from your face to what is around you. It is a way to rejoin the conversation, not a way to remove a blush.

3. Feel your feet

Press your feet into the floor and notice your seat. Grounding is quiet and invisible. You can use it while you listen, answer a question or wait your turn.

4. Say it lightly, if you want

Some people choose to name it with humour or warmth: “I always go pink at this part.” Others prefer to say nothing. Neither is wrong. Naming it is an option, and it is fine to carry on without comment.

5. Be kind afterwards

Afterwards, you might notice the urge to replay the moment. You can say to yourself, “I got through a self-conscious moment.” A walk, a glass of water or a call with a friend can move you on. If you want a gentle way to check how your body is, try a quick body check.

What other people see

You may feel as though your blush is a spotlight. Other people are often busy with their own thoughts, and they may not read it the way you do. You cannot know what anyone else is thinking, and you do not have to guess. If someone comments, you can say, “Yes, I blush,” and carry on.

Practical things

Some practical choices may help you feel more comfortable. Wear layers you can remove if you feel warm. Keep a glass of water close. Choose a seat where you are not in direct heat. If you notice that particular things, such as alcohol or hot drinks, seem to bring warmth for you, you can make your own choices about them. These are small comforts, and they carry no guarantee.

Blushing and self-criticism

Blushing can come with a harsh inner commentary. You might hear, “Everyone saw. I look foolish.” You do not have to argue with it or believe it. You can notice it as a thought, and come back to your feet and the room. Over time, you might find that the commentary has a little less hold, and if it does not, that is fine too.

When it is a bigger worry

If fear of blushing keeps you from work, school, friends or things you want to do, you can talk to a doctor or a therapist. Talk to a doctor as well if blushing or flushing comes with other symptoms, or appears suddenly in a way that is new for you, or if you are unsure. A doctor can check whether anything else is going on. You do not have to wait for it to get worse before you ask.

Compliments and attention

Blushing can also come with praise. If you are given a compliment, you can say “thank you” and let your face do what it does. You do not have to deflect the praise to cover the colour.

A short script

If you want words ready, try one of these:

  • “I am a bit warm, give me a second.”
  • “I blush, it is just how I am.”
  • “Thanks, that caught me off guard.”

You can say the line, smile if you like and move on.

At the start of a conversation

If you know a meeting or date is coming, arrive a few minutes early, find a place to sit and look around the room before anyone else arrives. Starting settled in the room can give you something to come back to. If the blush arrives anyway, you have already got your feet and the room to return to.

Treatment

This article does not cover treatments for blushing or flushing. If you want to look at options, ask a doctor. Avoid products or promises that claim to switch blushing off.
