Moving house ranks high on every stress scale for a reason: your home is your nervous system’s base camp, and packing it into boxes registers as ground giving way – even when the new place is wonderful. These six practices steady you through the transition.
1. Ground in the old home before you leave it
Before the boxes take over, walk through each room slowly. Let your eyes rest on the corners where life happened. This is not sentimentality – it is completion. Orienting to the old space lets your system register: this chapter happened, and it ends well.
2. Pack in tides, not marathons
Fifty minutes packing, ten minutes body: stretch, water, feet on the floor, eyes out the window. The urge to push through is how moving week becomes moving breakdown. Completing stress cycles in small doses beats one giant crash.
3. Moving day: shake between loads
Between van trips, thirty seconds of shaking your arms and shoulders. Moving day is a marathon of micro-stresses; discharging in layers keeps the fuse long.
4. Set up the bed first
Before the kitchen, before the wifi – the bed. A made bed in a new place is a signal to your nervous system that base camp exists again. Sleep is the repair crew; give it somewhere to work.
5. Orient to the new neighbourhood slowly
Walk the area without errands: find the shop, the tree, the tea place. Let your eyes and ears map it. New spaces feel like nobody’s land until they are mapped – then, sometimes within days, they start feeling like territory.
6. Expect the flat evening and let it be flat
Somewhere in the first week comes the hollow evening: boxes half-open, everything unfamiliar, a pang of what have I done. Do not argue with it. Feel your feet, breathe out long, cook something simple. The flatness is the sound of roots loosening before they take again.
When the dust settles
A new home is also a rare chance to build better defaults – a morning practice corner, a phone-free bedroom. Morning somatic practices are a good first resident.
And if the move ever brings you to Goa, our training is twelve days of learning to feel at home in the one place you always live: your body.
