6 Somatic Tools for the PMS Week

Six somatic tools for the premenstrual week - working with the tenderness, energy dips and shorter fuse instead of fighting them.

The week before a period can rearrange everything: energy, mood, pain tolerance, patience, sleep. These tools are about working with that week rather than white-knuckling through it. They are comfort and self-knowledge tools – severe symptoms deserve medical care, which this list is not.

1. Map your own week

PMS is personal: your week has its own timing, its own first signal – irritability, breast tenderness, the day everything feels harder. Tracking two or three cycles can make the week more predictable, so it feels less like an ambush.

2. Lower the week’s demands deliberately

If you can, schedule around the forecast: the hard conversation, the big night out, the deadline sprint – not this week, when avoidable. This is not fragility; it is load management, the same judgment you would apply to a recovering ankle.

3. Move gently, especially when you do not want to

A slow walk, stretching or gentle yoga may feel good even when the couch is tempting. Stop if anything hurts. Gentle is the whole instruction.

4. Warmth and rest

A heat pack on the belly or back, a bath, an early night. Use comfortable warmth only to avoid burns, and follow your clinician’s advice about pain relief – comfort measures are not a substitute for medication.

5. Feed the week what it actually asks for

Cravings do not diagnose magnesium or iron deficiency. Eat regular meals, keep your fluids up, and let yourself have some comfort food without guilt.

6. Name the shorter fuse before it fires

If the week makes you quicker to anger or tears, name it early to the people close to you: this is a hard week, I need a little more room. The right company, deliberately chosen, may feel supportive. Co-regulation cannot guarantee that conflict will be avoided.

When to get help

If PMS symptoms are severe enough to disrupt work, relationships or daily life, or the mood symptoms are heavy – deep low mood, anxiety, hopelessness – see your doctor. PMDD and other conditions are real, diagnosable and treatable; “just PMS” is not a verdict you have to accept.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself, feel at risk of acting on them, or cannot stay safe, contact emergency services or a crisis line immediately and stay with someone you trust.
