Can You Make a Living as a Somatic Practitioner?

How somatic practitioners actually earn: private sessions, groups, workshops, retreats and online work - without invented salary figures.

Can you make a living as a somatic practitioner? Yes, people do – but nobody honest can tell you how much you will earn, because there is no salary scale for this work. Most somatic practitioners are self-employed, and income depends on your format, your location, and your willingness to do the unglamorous half of the job: finding the people who need you. Here is how practitioners actually earn, and what makes the difference.

How somatic practitioners actually earn

Private one-to-one sessions

The foundation of most practices. Sessions are typically priced like other skilled bodywork or coaching in your area. One-to-one work builds slowly but creates the deepest results – and the word of mouth that fills a practice.

Small groups and weekly classes

A group of six to ten people meeting weekly is steadier income than scattered private sessions and often the first format that feels sustainable. Groups also let people experience your work at a lower price before booking privately.

Workshops and retreats

Day workshops, weekend immersions, and – once you have a name – retreat weeks. Higher ticket, higher effort, and the format where a small training like ours aims you from day one. Many practitioners run a few of these a year as the backbone of their income.

Online sessions and programmes

Guided somatic work translates well to video: no rent, no commute, clients in any timezone. Many practitioners mix in-person and online formats to smooth out the calendar.

Adding somatics to work you already do

For yoga teachers, massage therapists, coaches and counsellors, somatic skills raise the value of what you already offer rather than replacing it: private somatic-informed sessions, better retreats, a deeper toolkit in every class.

The part nobody puts in the brochure

The skills that get you paid are not only the somatic ones. You will also be choosing prices, answering enquiries, keeping a simple online presence, and asking people to book. This is exactly why the Parimukti training includes a dedicated business workshop on building your practice – because brilliant facilitators starve quietly when nobody teaches them this part.

A realistic ramp looks like this: the first months are practice and confidence – low prices, small groups, generous energy. Within a year or two of consistent work, most committed practitioners have a stable core of regulars. The ones who struggle are usually not the ones with weak facilitation skills; they are the ones who never told anyone they were open for business.

Setting your prices

There is no rate card for somatic work, so most practitioners anchor to their local market: find what experienced massage therapists, counsellors or yoga privates charge where you live, and position yourself within that range – usually at the lower end while you are new, moving up as your calendar fills. Groups are priced per person so that the room together earns more than a private session while each participant pays less. Workshops are priced by the transformation, not the hour: a full day that changes how someone sleeps is not an eight-hour session.

Two rules that save beginners grief: always charge something, even at the start – free work fills calendars with people who do not value it – and raise prices by adding formats, not by apologising. A waitlist is the polite signal that your prices are too low.

How fast does a training pay for itself?

Do this sum for your own situation before you book: take the full training cost and divide it by what you would charge per private session in your area. The answer is the number of sessions that repays the training. For a training in the hundreds to low thousands of euros, that number is usually smaller than people fear – a realistic first year, not a fantasy career.

What we will not promise you

You will see schools imply that a certificate comes with an income. It does not – ours included. A certificate proves you were trained and assessed. What you build with it is yours. What we can say: graduates leave with supervised practice experience, a clear scope, a business foundation, and alumni access that does not expire. The rest is craft and consistency.

If you want to see what that looks like in real lives, read what our graduates say. And if you are still weighing the decision itself, our guide to whether somatic training is worth it walks through the honest math.
