7 Somatic Practices for After a Rejection

Seven somatic practices for the hours and days after a rejection - working with the sting in the body while the mind catches up.

A no from a person, a job, a school, a publisher – rejection lands in the body like a small impact: the drop in the stomach, the heat in the face, the sudden tiredness. These seven practices are for the hours after.

1. Let the first wave be physical

In the first hour, skip analysis entirely. Find a private place and let the body do what it is doing: sink, shake, heat up, cry. Set a gentle container – ten minutes, a closed door – and let the wave move. Shaking the hands and arms for a minute is one option.

2. Slow your breathing

When the rejection replays – the email reread, the moment rewatched – answer each replay with one slow, extended out-breath. A longer exhale is a simple breathing practice. Stop if you feel dizzy.

3. Feel where “not wanted” sits – and hold it

Notice where you feel it in your body, perhaps the chest or stomach, and put a warm hand there if that is comforting. Self-contact is optional.

4. Interrupt the globalizing

If the story becomes “nobody will ever”, go local: feel your feet, look around the room, name what is actually in front of you. Orienting brings you back to the room you are in.

5. Move your body

Try a brisk walk, stairs, dancing to two loud songs. Somatic walking is one option.

6. Talk to one safe human

Tell one person who is good at not fixing: “I got a no, and it stings.” See Co-regulation.

7. Extract one usable note, then close the file

A stronger application, a better fit to seek, a skill to build. Write it in one sentence. If nothing comes, “they were wrong for me” is a complete finding. Then let it go for now.

If the sting does not fade

If a rejection keeps aching for weeks, or joins an older pattern of feeling unwanted, a therapist can help. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a crisis line or your local emergency number.
